Maori Culture

Kia ora This week (Week 2) we are learning about Maori Culture

I have heard that some of the native birds, plants and names are just Maori names (e.g. Kea, Kowhai, Tui). In our Learning pathways we wrote Digital mihis in our 'about me' page, we have to write about ourselves in Maori, so what our nearest mountain or river and what you like is in a Mihi. Manuwera Intermediate went to our school to teach the boys the haka and teach the girls a waiata. We also learnt how to pronounce some feelings, native birds and nature in Maori with Mrs Dillner and with Mr Dyer we sang some other waiatas with sign. On Thursday we went to the zoo to learn about animals, we mostly learnt about cheetah's, flamingo's and african elephants and I learnt some of the animals Maori names. Maaori is quite tricky to learn because nga sounds like na.

Thank You

  1. Kia Ora Justin,
What a terrific post! I learned so much about how you viewed last week and what you learned from our learning experiences- thank you. I also like how you are making connections and I didn't know 'tui' was a Maori word- so I am learning too! What's your favourite animal/colour/number in Maori?
