Justin V's Literacy Summary Learning Story

Learner:  Justin Villaflores   Learning Coach: Bex Remington      Date: 17 March 2015
Learning Area:  iDevelop - Reading: Summary of a story
Learning Observed

Justin’s literacy group read a story about a family who get caught in a Tsunami. As part of their reading task the learners were asked to read the story and then write a summary in their own words.  Justin said he found the story really interesting to read and he struggled to narrow the whole story down to just a few short paragraphs, so I asked him to share what he had written with the rest of the group to see if we could help him.
Evidence of learning
This is a video of Justin reading his summary to the group.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Justin is developing his capability in summarising, he also shows great capability when it comes to writing and his summary shows his own individual style.  He was able to work independently which demonstrated his ability to manage himself.  It was good to see Justin reading his summary to the rest of the group as he was able to not only look for feedback from others but was helping other members of the group to remember important details and after his reading there was a lot of discussion about what main details should look like.  This was an example of Justin being able to participate and contribute to a group.
Next Learning Steps

  • Remember that a summary is a short recap of the main event and doesn’t include direct speech
  • Practice summarising by talking to others about books he has read or movies he has seen
  • Write summaries of books that he has enjoyed for other students who are looking for more information about a book
